Penitent's Toll is a border rite imposed on all who enter Bastion of Aurex. At the gate each traveler inscribes a True Shadow: a charcoal silhouette or light-traced outline matching their form.
Later inspections under heliograph beams compare living figure and shadow-record. If the two do not match - through deception, possession, or tampering - the bearer erupts in painful light-scars that blaze anew at each dawn until the discrepancy is resolved.
