The Spirit-Races are midsummer competitions in which riders mount horses, dream-steeds, or Simiah kite-gliders to race across the Ohlai Steppe. Flutes and drums summon ancestral herds to run unseen beside them.
The victor's clan gains the right to set the Song-Law until the next Highlong, shaping trade and treaty customs. Many riders emerge with prophetic visions or an uncanny knack for pursuit.
